In what has become an annual tradition, all of Peninsular Florida’s Teen Bible Quiz teams sailed through Regionals and will represent the district at this July’s Teen Bible Quiz National Finals.
Defending National Champion Wesley Chapel Victorious Life Assembly, first-year Fort Lauderdale Christian Life Center, and veterans Orlando Faith Assembly all placed in the top five to gain automatic bids to the season ending competition in Dallas, Texas. Wesley Chapel was named Regional Champions, while Fort Lauderdale won a 3-team playoff with Orlando and a team from Toccoa, Georgia to place fourth. Orlando beat Toccoa in a final playoff for fifth place and the final automatic bid. Teams from Montgomery, Alabama and Cumming, Georgia rounded out the top five.
Fort Lauderdale reached Regional Finals as a wildcard, after making an impressive showing during district competition. Although short on experience, hard work and solid quizzing when it counted carried them through a pressure-packed day at Regionals.
Orlando Faith had an up-and-down day, ending the round-robin as the top scoring team among the three that were tied for fourth place. They watched as Fort Lauderdale beat Toccoa, then had one of their down moments in their own loss to the CLC team. However, retiring coach Ray Berkey was able to gather his team and they responded with a decisive win over Toccoa. Afterwards, Ray told me that this would be his last match. Angie Berkey will be coaching the team in Dallas.
Meanwhile, Wesley Chapel had a typical, dominating day. Using another strong day from two-time Female Quizzer of the Year, Abby Rogers, VLC was undefeated, and will now prepare to defend their title in Texas.
All three teams will be part of the 40-team field, July 2-9 in Dallas, Texas.
Individually, Abby Rogers was top scorer for the day, averaging 135 points in VLC’s eight wins. Orlando’s Tamera Burkhalter was second high scorer for the day, with 96.88 points per match. Erinn Wolf from Wesley Chapel was 7th in points, with a 80.63 average, and CLC’s Daniel Notman was 9th while averaging 72.50 points per match.
In the Middle School division of Regionals, although Wesley Chapel was the most prolific scoring team, they were upset in two matches, and finished in second place with a 5-2 record. The other Pen. Florida team present, Orlando Faith, ended their day in seventh place at 1-6.
Individually, Wesley Chapel’s Shannon Wolf ended the day as the second place scorer, with 510 points, only 10 points behind first place Paula Ann Granston of Snellville, Georgia. Shannon’s teammate, Alexandria Mintah, was in fourth, with 460 points.
Congratulations to all our Peninsular Florida Bible Quiz teams.
